Growing Plants from Seed

Caring for Seedlings

Initially, most plants require warmth to germinate. A soil temperature of 22C or thereabouts should do it. There are a few exceptions but this information will be included on the seed packet. A warm south-facing windowsill may be all you need but beware of cold nights. It may be necessary to move them to avoid delaying germination or even worse. If you cannot find anywhere around the home or green house to provide this sort of temperature, then it may be worth investing in a heated mat that is sold for exactly this situation.

Of course the seeds want to be surrounded by moisture – not soaked but moist. You should, therefore ensure that that top layer of soil does not dry out.

Once the seeds begin to germinate they will thank you for somewhere a little cooler but with sunlight and plenty of it. They must have sunlight to stimulate growth and if the little plants don’t get enough then they will grow tall and spindly as they search for the light.
